I document East London. The place, and the people inside it.

This is my personal work. It records the city before it changes. Streets, estates, signage, transit, the ordinary things most people pass. I make it on the street first. Then I scan it, set it and print it. Photography, film and type, held together by one place.

It began as a record of a disappearing place. It became a record of a disappearing self.

A 74-page book made from one place. Estate codes, signage, graffiti, receipts and collage, gathered by hand and set into an archive of Dagenham.

Every page was built physically before it was scanned. It was made to feel unstable, because that is how the place felt at the time.

About

Dagenham

Harry Cawdron is an artist and designer based in Dagenham, East London.

The work documents the city. Ordinary places, working-class places, and what happens to them over time. The interest underneath is human. Memory, class, and belonging.

Everything is made physically first. On the street, in sketchbooks. Then scanned, set and printed into objects you can hold. Photography, film and type, one place.

Cawdron is the commercial studio. This is the personal work behind it.
